After gathering our luggage and piling it on the cart from customs, I moved through the green line. Navigating the cart down the narrow exit, we quickly saw the people that stood waiting to connect with family, friends and acquaintances.
I noticed a tall Asian man dressed in chauffeur attire holding a white cue card with the name “Richard Atkinson” printed on it. I motioned to my wife, “Did you see that?”
Thousands of miles away from my home, that man knew my name and yet he didn’t know me. In fact, he was meeting another Richard Atkinson at the airport who most likely also had been on my plane.
Have you ever thought of how many people have the same name as you do? When I lived in Ohio and California, I actually met two men that had my same name. In fact, the one in California received the closing papers on my house instead of me. But just think, how many people in the phone book or on Facebook have the same name as you?
I’m glad God knows my name. He knows me distinctly from any other Richard Atkinson. He is not just an acquaintance. God knows me intimately because He created me. God knows you intimately because He has created you: “But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel, ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!’” (Isaiah 43:1-3).
